38176662_1275072c20Silver Lake is famous (or infamous for depending on your perspective) for being a hipster haven.  Much to the chagrin of its residents, it was named the hippest neighborhood in America by Forbes in 2012. Now the world knows (or at least Forbes readers know) what Angelenos have long known, which is that Silverlake is an awesome place to call home. No matter what age, stage or predilection, you can find it in Silver Lake. The restaurants (and food trucks) are plentiful.  The architecture is some of the best in LA. It has a public elementary school that is off the charts good.  And don’t get me started on the coffee. Its eponymous Reservior is a major draw for the outdoorsy types and young families who walk, run or sunbathe the days away.

 Stuff To Do

The Silver Lake Reservior is a veritable playground for parents, kids and even dogs.  The jogging path around the reservoir is 2.2 miles. There is a grass ‘beach’ for sun seekers. The recreation facility has a kids play area, community rom, picnic tables and an off leash dog park.  Stop by on any weekend and you are likely to see impossibly cool parents hovering over their coffee cups while watching their mini hipsters play soccer or basketball.

Silver Lake is known for good grub.  I’m going to leave the task of culling the best of the best restaurants in Silverlake to LA Weekly. But I will give a special shout out to one of my fav’s, Forage.

Whether you are in the market for unique frocks, chic gifts, fancy skincare or even fancier glassware, Silverlake has you covered.  Some of my favorite shops are:

OK Silverlake

 Reform School

Silver Lake is a huge draw for young families because it has one of the best public elementary schools in Los Angeles- Ivanhoe Elementary.  The LA Times gives it an (unofficial) 10/10 rating. Parents of young children flock to the school district and homes in Ivanhoe’s district often command a premium.

The SilverLake Library offers all kinds of programs for young and not so young kids.

Got young kids?  Check out Wallaby Family Development Center, i.e. awesome indoor play place.
